These legends, held sacred by the Sandy Lake Cree Indians, have, due to tribal custom, never been recorded before - preserved only in the memory of the elder story-tellers on the reserve. Now, in collaboration with the Cree artist Carl Ray (1943-1978), who translated the stories of his tribe and illustrated them, James R. Stevens*, a collector of folklore, has brought together many of the most fascinating of the legends, and his introduction, outlines the history of these people and their way of life.

This volume of Canadiana is an exciting adventure into an isolated part of the country where men with "power" still place curses on adversaries; where marriages are usually arranged by parents; and where old ceremonies are held to cure illness and disease. Even though the impact of the twentieth century is beginning to be felt on the reserve, the sacred legends of the windigo, thunderbirds, and avenging god, still have their place in Cree belief and are recorded here for the first time.
